Probation

All new members spend one year on probation. During this time “probies” complete all of their mandatory basic training. They must also maintain an alarm, department drill and meeting percentage. Probies are also required to learn all department operating procedures and protocols. When they have completed a year of probation and finished their training satisfactorily, probies are assigned to a company where they continue their training as a firefighter or EMTs.

Firefighters

Firefighters are responsible for all fire suppression activities. They respond to structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, carbon monoxide alarms, hazardous materials incidents, etc. The Uniondale Fire Department provides some of the most extensive firefighter training in Nassau County. During a member’s probationary period, they can expect to train with each company as well as spend time at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy. Our Mobile Training Unit or “Training Trailer” allows us to schedule “live burn” drills for our members regularly. The unit is currently the only one on Long Island and many other departments visit us to train with it. When not working with the “probies”, companies will drill on a weekly basis. Members are also encouraged to continue their education and training by attending classes at the Fire Academy. The Fire Academy provides a large curriculum of courses that are certified at the County, State, and National levels. Safety is a key issue in our department and properly trained firefighters are the foundation for operating safely.

Emergency Medical Technicians

Those interested in Emergency Medical services are professionally trained through the Nassau County Police Fire Academy or the Nassau County Vocational Education Extension Board. Recruits will spend one year on probation as they attain the certification of New York State Emergency Medical Technician. They will also train along side our EMS Company and attend department drills. After completing probation and having an additional year of experience, EMT’s may increase their certification by studying for Advanced-EMT or Paramedic. Members also attend CME classes during the year and must refresh their certification every three years. Those interested specifically in EMS do not have to become firefighters and are assigned to the EMS Company. Those interested in both firefighting and EMS can begin their EMT training after they have completed their probationary training period as a firefighter.

Extra Curricular Activities

With all the hard work that our members put in throughout the year, there has to be some fun that goes along. Members can compete on our Tournament Drill Team or the Softball Team. Both teams are in action during the summer months. The Softball Team competes in a Fire Department League and plays most games on weekday nights. The Drill Team, for those unfamiliar, is something of a New York State volunteer fire department tradition that started on Long Island. Dating back to the 1930s, fire departments have competed against each other in “motorized” and “old-fashioned” type events. The Uniondale & Munson Fire Department currently competes in the “old-fashioned” category.

Social Events

Our families endure our absence regularly so we must include them in our functions as much as possible. The Uniondale & Munson Fire Department hosts a number of events for both members and their families. Each year a Holiday Party, an Annual Installation Dinner, and a Department Picnic are held. The children are treated to their own Halloween and Holiday Parties. We also run a fishing trip in the summer and each company usually holds its own holiday dinner and Summer BBQ as well.

WHAT IF NO ONE ANSWERED THE CALL?

Every day, in our community, members of the Uniondale Fire Dept. answer the call of our families, friends and neighbors who are in need of assistance. From auto accidents to heart attacks, from house fires to carbon monoxide alarms, we are there to protect lives and property.

Emergency responders are a special type of people, with many different reasons for answering the call of duty. Some like the challenges and the adrenaline rush, while others like to sharpen their emergency skills and techniques.

Becoming a volunteer emergency responder can be the most rewarding experience of your life and allows you to reach out to someone in need. Together with the Uniondale & Munson Fire Department, you can ensure that there is always someone to “answer the call.”
